Hi Star Trek Fans ...

da ich seit dem Start der closed Beta auch STO Betatester bin (ja, dat dreckelige XP habe ich mir auf mein schönes MBP dazugepackt) ... möchte ich hier schonmal einen STO Thread anfangen.

STO begeistert mich bereits jetzt schon zur closed Beta und das schaffte bisher nur das gute alte Neocron ...

Am 12.01.2010 startet die open Beta und wer sich bei Amazon UK die special Edition bestellt, spart nicht nur gegenüber der deutschen Version (client soll eh multilingual sein) satte 15 Euro, nein, er bekommt auch einen open Beta Key, ne olle Borgsuse und noch irgendein Goodie ...

am 02.02.2010 solles dann losgehen, bzw. für Vorbesteller sogar etwas früher ...

Ich hoffe, es werden einige auch aus dieser tollen Gemeinde auf dem Spacedock anzutreffen sein ...

Außerdem wäre es vielleicht besser, das Bild oben rechts in ein eigenes div zu packen und als background-image zu definieren...
Das selbe müsste mit dem Statusbild gehen...

Unofficial Mac version testing....

just a big note...

this is not made by or supported in any way by Cryptic studios, or anyone associated with Cryptic studios.. this is entirely fan made, by me... with the use of Wine, and Xquartz.

The download I'm providing is for TESTING. I need to know what other configurations of Macs it is working ok on, or what new problems appear on others machines. Download link is at the bottom

This download is a "wrapper" not the full game. You will have to either copy your installed version from Windows inside of it (fastest), or reinstall the game into it and do full patching and everything...

List of known issues (things I've noticed running it on my machine)
The log in and patcher menus are ugly... but work... (answer "yes" to script errors)
In Sector space, sometimes in ground missions, and certain space maps, things stop refreshing right and the screen gets crazy and washed out... only happens in certain areas near certain types of places... toggling any onscreen menu fixes it.. at least temporarily. It happens a LOT in sector space. Very annoying... number 1 priority to fix.
Fonts are extremely ugly.. I've tried a lot of different font installs... need to know what Font STO is looking for so I can see about adding it in.
AA is not functional....

There are 2 work arounds for the graphics bug... neither is a good fix, but at least makes the game more playable until I find a better fix

1. In STO Options under Video, click on Troubleshooting, to see its menu, and turn Software Cursor on... (I turn on all the options in there really). When this is on, whenever he cursor is showing on the screen, the bug will not happen... if you right click to move, making the cursor disappear, it can happen again...

2. If you set "half resolution" on in STO options, it doesn't happen... but it looks ugly...

How to install
From an already working Windows install
Uncompress the .zip file download
Right click the Star Trek Online.app program, and select "Show Package Contents"
go to drive_c/Program Files and drop in a copy of your ready to go Cryptic Studios folder
Double clicking the Star Trek Online.app should now launch the game.
if game doesn't launch, go back in "Show Package Contents" and run WineskinSettings.app. Select Advanced, and Wineskin Configuration. On the set EXE entry at the top, select Choose, and re-choose the right .exe to run and Save and Exit.. and get out of WineskinSettings.app and try again.
From a downloaded ready to install beta version...
Uncompress the .zip file downloaded (double click it)
Double click to run the app
click OK on the error message the pops up that the game is missing
in Wineskin Settings menu that appears, select "Install Windows Software"
Choose the setup.exe file for the installer, and then go through the normal installation
After installation, choose the right Star Trek Online.exe file, and leave the top menu bar named to Star Trek Online
Double clicking the Star Trek Online.app should now launch the game, but it will take a lot of long patching
How to correctly change resolutions
Xquartz (the X11 windowing system Wine needs that is used on OSX) does not support everything needed for resolution switching, so you have to use Wineskin settings to get around this limitation. By default it will just stay at your current desktop resolution, so you need to change it if you want a smaller res.
Right click Star Trek Online.app and select "Show Package Contents"
Run the WineskinSettings.app program there
Select Screen Options, and under Fullscreen Options, Select the resolution you want to switch to... and make the game set for the same resolution... save and exit out o that app.
How to run in a window
Xquartz doesn't support fullscreen and windowing mode switches... (i hate Xquartz sometimes)
Right click Star Trek Online.app and select "Show Package Contents"
Run the WineskinSettings.app program there
Select Screen Options, and change it to Rootless (windowed) mode.
I suggest using a Virtual Desktop in Rootless Mode options if you are running STO in a fullscreen setting, it may not work other ways.

when prompted about graphics.. you can use default or lowered, both should work... I just use Default.

Please give feedback how this works... I need to know...

this link shows all versions I've made... basically you'll always want the last one, its what will match up with known info in this post (I'll keep it updated). Alpha 2 has working sound!



**** Added notes, only read if you want to.

I know the screen config stuff stinks, but Wine requires an X11 window system, which Macs do not use... but there are versions available to run on them. This has its own built in Xquartz X11 version, it does NOT use the X11.app installed on your machine.... I'm not that great with X.org, and haven't been able to get a working RANDR extension made for Xquartz that would allow this.

This should run on any Mac that meets the hardware requirements of the game... running Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5, or 10.6....

I am expecting problems with ATI graphics card Macs. There are many models of ATI cards that have some driver issues that show up frequently in Wine... some work fine. Its less likely to have issues if you have an nvidia GPU. I am expecting to have to hit the source code of Wine to finish making out a modified version (which its already using here) that has specific STO work arounds in it. This will not happen quickly since I'm back in school over full time getting my Comp Sci degree.... so don't expect a perfect version by release day, if ever, it could be several months or more... so far all the major hurdles have already been discovered and fixed by others, not me... while I have a lot of fun doing things like this, we can still hope for an official ported version in the future

PS. Ist nur ein Starter. Du brauchst den Clienten für Windows. Da wird dann mit den Starter Windows unter Mac Emuliert (WineSkin).
